Early Life & Career
Originally from Moynabad village in Chunarughat, Habiganj, Bangladesh, he completed his education in Bangladesh before spending a short period in the Middle East and subsequently moving to the United Kingdom in December 1991. Arriving in Britain with determination and an entrepreneurial spirit, he quickly began building what would become a highly successful international business career.
In 1994, Mamun established London Clothing Limited, importing garments and supplying customers throughout the United Kingdom and Europe while also operating his own manufacturing facility in London. Recognising the increasing competition from overseas production and the decline of traditional garment manufacturing in East London, he strategically repositioned the business in 1996 to focus exclusively on premium heritage outerwear and collaborated with some of Britain's leading fashion designers.
A strong believer in education, training, and continuous improvement, Mamun began offering work placements and practical training opportunities to fashion students in 1998. He often reflects that he learned as much from aspiring young designers as they learned from him, helping to shape his own creative vision and product development philosophy.
London Tradition & Recognition
Determined to create a world-class British outerwear brand, Mamun combined his growing design expertise with his manufacturing knowledge to develop his own brand and collections. In 2001, recognising the value of strategic partnership, he invited his friend and respected fashion executive Rob Huson to join him. Together they founded London Tradition Limited.
Under Mamun's leadership, London Tradition has become internationally recognised for its luxury heritage outerwear and its modern interpretation of iconic British garments, particularly the duffle coat. The company proudly continues redesign and manufacture in London and exports to more than twenty-three countries worldwide, helping preserve traditional British craftsmanship while embracing innovation and sustainability.
Mamun's business achievements have received significant recognition. London Tradition was awarded the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2014, one of the United Kingdom's highest honours for business achievement, in recognition of exceptional export growth. The company received the award for a second time in 2020, further demonstrating its continued international success.
His personal story and achievements have also been recognised in several notable publications. Mamun Chowdhury's journey was featured in The Story of Parliament, published by the History of Parliament Trust to commemorate 750 years of Parliament in Britain. He was also featured in a commemorative publication celebrating Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's 90th Birthday, alongside coverage in a number of mainstream media outlets in both the United Kingdom and Bangladesh.
Philanthropy & Community
Beyond business, Mamun has dedicated much of his life to education, community development, healthcare support, and charitable work. Through London Tradition, he regularly supports charitable organisations throughout the United Kingdom. For many years the company has donated surplus garments, samples, and products to Royal Trinity Hospice charity shops. These donations generated significant funds over a six-year period, helping fund vital hospice care services, and Mamun was honoured with a Certificate of Achievement recognising this contribution.
He also regularly supports Cancer Research UK and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, contributing to healthcare, medical research, and support for vulnerable patients and families.
Global Impact & Vision
In Bangladesh, Mamun has established three educational institutions, including Jahanara Chowdhury Women's College, to expand educational opportunities for disadvantaged communities. Through these institutions and associated educational programmes, many students from underprivileged backgrounds have been able to access education free of charge and pursue brighter futures.
He has also developed community healthcare initiatives that have helped hundreds of people, particularly those suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses, gain access to treatment, guidance, and financial support.
One of Mamun's most ambitious social initiatives is a long-term education programme aimed at helping create 1,000 university graduates from underprivileged backgrounds. Hundreds of students supported through this initiative are already studying at universities, while many former beneficiaries have progressed into professional careers and leadership positions throughout Bangladesh.
Mamun firmly believes that education is the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and creating lasting social change. This belief continues to guide his philanthropic work and long-term vision for community development. Today, Mamun's vision extends beyond building successful businesses. He seeks to create opportunities that empower individuals, strengthen communities, and inspire future generations through education, skills development, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility.
His journey from a small village in Bangladesh to becoming an internationally recognised British entrepreneur reflects the values that have guided his life and career: quality, service, value, innovation, trust, fairness, compassion, and social responsibility.
